Beauty Envision Awards - The Inside Story

BEA Workshop
(Beauty Envision Awards)

We are always looking for ways to push ourselves out of our comfort zones at Tappa Hair Salon.

A huge opportunity that definitely pushes our team out of their comfort zones and encourages them to use their creative talents is the Beauty Envision Awards, otherwise known as the BEA’s (or in years past Trend Vision)

This hair competition has many categories including 'Future Star', 'Editorial Hair', 'Men’s Hairstyling', 'Hair Transformation', 'Nails', 'Bridal', Colourist of the Year', and 'Salon Team'.

The concept of this competition is to create a look, including makeup and wardrobe, have it photographed, and enter into the competition.  If you place and become a semi-finalist you will then compete in Los Angeles, where you will recreate your look on stage in front of an enormous audience. From there, if you become a finalist, you will go on to the Worlds competition and compete again.  This year, the Worlds were held in Greece.

To organize this workshop we brought in expert hairstylists from Toronto to mentor our team, as well as known local makeup artists, and an adept photographer from Montreal.

This process began with those from our team that wanted to participate by having them select their models.  Model selection is very important.  We want individuals who are open to different colours and styles, possess a unique look, and carry themselves with poise and confidence.

Our team had researched what the trending looks, colours, and placements for hair is this season, and initialized on paper, or in our heads, what we desired to design.  The direction of fashion for hair is being inspired by everything vintage.  The looks have curls, smoothness, and soft touchable styles, while still demonstrating some structure.   Colours are soft, pastel like, and on the filtered side of tones.  The placements consist of melting and blending of different muted colours.  Using this information the members of the team created a plan they could mould for themselves.

From there the transformation begins. Our workshop was in April, approximately one week prior to the 2 day workshop set up for our participants in which they began to prepare their “canvas” for colouring, cutting, and styling.

When the participants came to the two day workshop, the session began with a brainstorming of the images and plans they had for their models.  Then our mentor hairstylists began the journey with our team to create their images.  The next many hours were spent formulating colours, and perfecting their desired outcomes.

The second day of the workshop was dedicated to styling their models, makeup, wardrobe selection and then the photo shoot, of course.

We are so proud of not only our team that entered this competition but our three team members that agreed to be models!!

By the end of day 2 our team members may have been physically and mentally exhausted, however they were on “highs” from what they had created and captured via photography!!

Now we wait to see if any of our team members will be announced as semi-finalists on May 24th.  No matter the outcome we have confirmed what a talented, creative group of stylists we have on our team. Don’t stop watching for their work as they are going to continue to compete and take on the “Hair World”!!
